What's Beneath Your Sciatic Pain?

By Dr Matthew Tonnos

Not a week goes by where I don't encounter somebody living with sciatic pain. This is the pain felt on the sides of the lower back that shoots down through the buttocks and sometimes even into the back of the legs. The two sciatic nerves are the longest nerves in the human nervous system. When these nerves are damaged, they take a toll on a person's day-to-day function.
This pain doesn't have to mean a lifetime of painkillers and limited mobility. Sciatic pain is not a life sentence. Not only is it possible to eliminate this pain entirely, but with proactive care, it is realistic to expect that it'll never come back.
The first step to freedom is understanding how the nerve was damaged. The modern lifestyle of the average North American is brutal on the spine. We sit for longer periods of time, our waistlines are expanding, and we work harder than ever to achieve the world's idea of success. Sitting immobile for hours and then bending, lifting, or twisting - this causes incredible strain on the vertebrae in the lower back. When vertebrae slip out of alignment, this is called a subluxation. Subluxations cause dangerous pressure on the nervous system by inhibiting, or even cutting off, the nerve's ability to receive messages from the brain, which is the foundation of how our bodies function.
The truth is: I'm not overly concerned about the pain caused when the sciatic nerve is damaged. I have no doubt the pain is debilitating and making life extremely difficult; I feel for you. But I'm more concerned about the fact that the sciatic nerves are what control the function of the urinary and reproductive systems. When vertebrae L4 and L5 are subluxated, the sciatic nerves are unable to do what they were made to.
One of my patients, we'll call her Mary, came in complaining about sciatic pain. In the process of investigating her health history, we found that Mary also struggled with incontinence; something she never thought was related to the pain in her lower back. After regular chiropractic care, not only has her pain disappeared, but she has regained full control of her bladder. By freeing up the passage from brain to nerves, Mary's body went into healing mode and regained full function. Mary is 67.
Another patient, let's call her Susanne, had been trying to get pregnant for two years by the time she walked through our doors with sciatic back pain. Again, she never imagined one had anything to do with the other. It gives me great joy to report that with regular chiropractic care, Susanne is now blissfully pregnant.
"But Matt," you might say, "I saw a chiropractor years ago and go to physiotherapy. It is just not going away."
Maybe you've already seen doctors about your sciatic pain and nothing has helped. Or what's more frustrating: maybe it went away briefly only to come roaring back. It's important to remember that not all types of rehab are the same, even within medicine. The way one family doctor treats one concern is different than the approach another doctor will take. Don't lose hope. Just because you've already poured energy into rehabilitation, different kinds of exercises, or manipulations of the spine doesn't mean you've exhausted all options. We have witnessed hundreds of success stories from patients who were once hopeless. Always remain hopeful.
Yes; Chiropractic care is good for eliminating pain. But more important than anything, it is a vital step in your routine to maintaining your overall health. Make an important decision to start chiropractic care today and begin to see all that your body is capable of.
